Devices and Mac OS X version
The first desktop version, Mac OS X 10.0, was released in March 2001, with its first update, 10.1, arriving later that year. After this, Apple began naming its releases after big cats, which lasted until OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Since OS X 10.9 Mavericks, releases have been named after locations in California. Drop 1 5 25. If you are wondering if you can run El Capitan on an older Mac, rejoice as it’s possible too. But before your Mac can run El Capitan it has to be updated to OS X 10.6.8. So, here are main steps you should take: 1. Install Snow Leopard from install DVD. Update to 10.6.8 using Software Update. Download El Capitan here.
VLC media player requires Mac OS X 10.7.5 or later. It runs on any 64bit Intel-based Mac. Previous devices are supported by older releases.

Web browser plugin for Mac OS X
Support for NPAPI plugins was removed from all modern web browsers, so VLC's plugin is no longer maintained. The last version is 3.0.4 and can be found here. It will not receive any further updates.

We provide older releases for users who wish to deploy our software on legacy releases of Mac OS X. You can find recommendations for the respective operating system version below. Note that support ended for all releases listed below and hence they won't receive any further updates.

Use VLC 2.0.10. Get it for PowerPC or 32bit Intel.

Upgrading from Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion)
Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) is no longer available for purchasefrom the Mac App Store. Reinstalling Mountain Lion
To reinstall or recover Mountain Lion, you must have an activeInternet connection. If you are on campus at Indiana University,UITS recommends the wired Ethernet network instead ofwireless. However, if IU Secure is your only option, seeConnect to an IU wireless network in macOS if booted from your Recovery HD
Reinstalling while keeping files, applications, and settings
- Restart your computer, and immediately hold down
command-r
until the gray Apple logo appears. - If prompted, select your main language and then click the arrow.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue. Follow the instructions on the screen, and then choose your hard disk. Click Install, and enter your Apple ID information if prompted.
- When the installation is complete, select App Store.. from the Apple menu, and install any available updates.
Reinstalling while erasing everything on your computer

- Restart your computer, and immediately hold down
command-r
until the gray Apple logo appears. - If prompted, select your main language and then click the arrow.
- Click Disk Utility, and then Continue.
- In Disk Utility, from the left column, click your harddisk. Select the Erase tab.
- Next to 'Format:', make sure Mac OS Extended (Journaled)is selected. Next to 'Name:', give your disk a name.
- If you would like to securely erase your data, click SecurityOptions.., adjust the slider accordingly, and clickOK. When you're ready, click Erase.., andthen Erase again to erase your disk. When the processcompletes, quit Disk Utility.
- Click Reinstall OS X, and then Continue. Followthe instructions and then choose your hard disk. ClickInstall and enter your Apple ID information if prompted.Once the installation is complete, you'll be asked to enter basicinformation and have the option to transfer data from another computeror a backup.
- Select Software Update.. from the Apple menu and installany available updates.
